Old School Currencies

Dec 22, 2008

It's not obvious whether the sign for "Coin Locker" is in response to it's drab urban camouflage or that, because it takes a contactless payments (SUICA), which is visible from a distance people assume that the locker's don't accept cash.

Extenuating Behaviours

Stationary sk8er from Shinjuku above, and Sangenjaya below.

An, ahem, extension of the research detailed in The Body Has a Mind of Its Own - that point at which we move beyond thinking of objects as mere objects.

Bank holiday here in Japan, and a Shimo Kita beckons.

Pocketable Letraset

Nov 24, 2008

Ticket machine at the Shinjuku park entrance 'prints' a time stamp by magnetising part of the card surface. Nice enough in that the card can be re-re-re-used, but technological overkill in that visitors walk a few meters to give the ticket up at the gate.

For every notate-able surface the ease of writing, wiping, rewriting.

For every situation just a little too much technology.

Motivations for Notating Currency

Shinjuku, 2008

Punters of this Tokyo camera store are handed a notated coin for this scratch-off lottery card. For any given context - whether ownership needs to be made explicit and for what kind of objects?

Disparate thoughts related to money: alternative forms of currency and value - from airtime to kiva donations, combined with increasingly sophisticated ways to track how money is spent. How will recipients convert donations into the things they really want to spend money and stay under the radar?

Best place to buy used camera gear in Tokyo? Probably here.
