With smart packing and judiscious use of hotel laundry services a 30 litre pack + small satchel is comfortably enough for a 2 week exploratory trip spanning three different climate zones. If you've ever wondered about the gear used exploring the future perfect luggage recommendations can be found here.

Timbuk2 make robust gear. http://www.timbuk2.com/ I've been packing around one of their medium size messenger bags for almost 5 years and it has barely frayed around the edges. Fits my DSLR with a decent lens and a battery pack on it, a notepad, and a bottle of water no problem.
For Canadians check out Mountain Equipment Co-op. http://www.mec.ca/ One of their convertible backpacks and the Timbuk2 bag and I'm still within carry on limits. 2 weeks in one climate zone no problem :)
With all my travel, It's become quite a quest for me to find the "right" pack to take on trips too. I can generally get all that I need into my Northface Heckler backpack (in black). It's got a convenient sleeve for my computer, and plenty of room for the camera and other items.
Speaking of cameras, I recommend the Tamrac Velocity 7x. It can fit a normal DSLR camera with 2 lenses, small video camera and rechargers. It's also inconspicuous and easy to hold onto when running around.
I travel with a backpack too. For my gear, I love my Crumpler 5 Million Dollar Home because it's nearly indistinguishable as a camera bag. Fits two camera bodies, three lenses, an audio recorder, and a Flip MinoHD quite nicely.
Personally I find carrying separate, padded camera bags overkill - the higher specced D-SLRs (NIkon d200+, Canon EOS 5D+, ...) are very solidly built.
It kinda helps having the Nikon and Canon service center headquarters based around the corner.
The only perfect bag is the one you don't have :)
I travel lightly, with a Patagonia MLC for travel and a Mountainsmith Tour lumbar bag for my DSLR and assorted camera stuff.
Hi,
I travel with the Bach Ultimate Duffle Nr 1.

it's simple, robust design looks nice enough to check into a posh hotel on a city trip while it fits under the seat of a Sri Lankan local bus.

I thought I was the one with a luggage fetish, but you lot are doing yourselves proud. Keep 'em coming.
I've been back and forth between Europe and America, and around Europe, with nothing but an OGIO Metro in black and I love it!
Had it for a few years now, still looks new, go on week long trips with it all the time.

I am in total agreement on the evils/horrors of checking luggage. My usual carry-on combo is a NorthFace pack (W40 something-or-other) and a Crumpler 6MDH. There's enough room in the pack for my laptop (in a MEC neoprene sleeve), and has plenty of room for 3+ weeks of stuff (without the laptop). The 6MDH has plenty of room for an SLR, a few lenses, a book or rain jacket, etc. but does get heavy after a few hours with the weight on just one shoulder.
Second vote for the carry-on friendly years-old Patagonia MLC and Mountainsmith Tour lumbar pack combination; I've logged many trips and miles over the years with the setup. I need a bit more space for my shoulder bag, and may soon replace the Tour pack.
If I need to "dress up" my equipment for suit-type clients I swap the Mountainsmith for a canvas Filson briefcase (http://www.filson.com/product/index.jsp?productId=2092402&cp=2675043&parentPage=family). It looks good, but weighs a ton.
When it comes to traveling with lots of stuff and thus having to check a bag, I use my BAD Bag #8 duffel (http://www.badbags.com).

Camelbak daypacks (Trailblazer, HAWG etc) are durable bags, and you can fit a 1-series Canon body and a lens in the bladder hold.
Also Tatonka does some really compact toiletry bags which take next to no space when all your carrying is a bar of soap, a razor and a toothbrush.
