this reminds me a lecture from David Carson I attended some years ago. He was basically questioning, how much of a graphic element (a logo or a word) you need to see to recognize it.
Obviusly this visual game, trying to guess the fragmented/hidden/messed/incomplete message, is the signature style that made Carson so famous in the 90s.
