Friday Pop Quiz: Cultural Differences

Barber's shop mural. Kampala, 2006

You might recall we've carried out various studies into where people carry their phones and other mobile essentials. The studies are usually run with at least 100 participants, but based purely on the anecdotal evidence of a single Sowetan mobile phone repair shop owner there are two simple questions for you to answer:
1: What the most common mobile phone fault of his female mobile phone customers?
2: Why is this fault far less likely to be found with female phone users in Japan or Korea?

A selection of Japanese design goodies from D & Dept shipped to the person with the most accurate answer to both of these questions.

Update: Answer and winner in the comments. And yes the detail of the photo (below) was loosely related figuring it out.

Where's the Phone? Kampala, 2006

Why is it none of the photos here are even taken with a Nokia phone (aren't they supposedly designed for that)? The person with the correct answer wins a gift from our store (International shipping not included)

1. Common fault: either acidic damage or water damage from persperation due to the fact that the phone is carried very near the body (possibly breast cleavage)
2. Far east demographic externally carries handset on a strap on wrist or around the neck

Most common fault is getting hair extensions caught in their phone...this is less common in Japan as hair extensions are not as popular?

Posted by: Tamsin at July 7, 2006 2:04 AM

Or related to this scratched screens from hair clasps holding in the extensions scoring the screen when the phone is held up to their ears???

So far 1 out the 4 previous comments has come close to one of the answers. Nope, not going to say who it is.

Oh OK, I'll make it easier - neither of Ken's were correct. Though thanks for the comments Ken.

scratches from earrings or other ear jewelry (or possibly mouth jewelry)

Posted by: chris h at July 7, 2006 2:21 AM

damage from carrying children or throwing phone at wayward husband ;)

Posted by: chris h at July 7, 2006 2:21 AM

My guess: Many more people in South Africa wear their cell phones on lanyards around their necks. If women are wearing heavy jewelry such as necklaces, the phone may scratch up against this. This is probably less prevalent in Japan/Korea because either wearing the phone around the neck is less popular or heavier necklaces likely to scratch the product are less common or fashionable.

Something to do with single Sowetan Women. My guess is damage to the phone from use and abuse since they dont have a holder for it. Compared to Korean/Japanese who have purses and holders.

Jan,

the Sowetan women customers have the problem of little children sucking on the phone like a dummy (teething ring), which would not be a problem for Asian women, who don't carry their children around on their hips in the same way.

All straying further from the real answers.

But keep guessing.

Actually I met a Korean working-mon. Her 1 years old daughter suck her mobile and melt the circuit. I can say mobile phone is one of most popular toy for babies.

My guess is dropping phone to water (Kitchen and toilet).

hmm, was Chris closer? I think his perspiration theory is right, causing short circuits or something or other but its because the soweto women are trying to keep the phone close to themselves for safe keeping. Japanese and Korean women don't have to worry about phone theft so they are happy to keep them in bags and hanging around...

Posted by: giddy at July 7, 2006 9:00 PM

OK. The first part of one question is correct - perspiration affecting the circuitry. But that still leaves where the phone is stored to be perspired on, and a full answer why it is much less likely to affect Japanese women.

Its friday, so use friday logic.

I'd guess the Sowetan women keep their phones in their cleavage, and then end up sweating over them. This from process of elimination of the differences between them and Japanese women: breasts, hair and hips. Cleavage provides for easy access, hair you deal with snags and weight is more of an issue and hips would need a clam shell design or some type of additional holster accessory.

I'm also guessing Japanese women spend a greater amount of time in climate controled enviroments, causing them to sweat less.

They get their mobiles peerched under their breasts...Japenese ladies don't tend to be as curvy in that area!

Posted by: tamsin at July 8, 2006 12:34 AM

sorry about the bad English!...it is Friday pm afterall...What I ment to say was Soweten ladies keep their mobiles in the space under their breasts...this area does tend to get very sweaty!

Posted by: Tamsin at July 8, 2006 12:39 AM

excuse the double postings...kept getting malicious content messages for the word breast!

Posted by: tamsin at July 8, 2006 12:41 AM

The answer and winner coming up.

First a recap of the questions.

1: What the most common mobile phone fault of his female mobile phone customers?

2: Why is this fault far less likely to be found with female phone users in Japan or Korea?

Phone damage caused by perspiration from the phone stored in the cleavage area.

Tasmin - technically not under the breasts. And Chris, 'possibly cleavage' without the 'possibly' would have been correct but that still left the other part of the question.

By the same logic I should disqualify Ken T - who correctly identified breasts, hair and hips> However Ken T also draws attention to ease of access (phone carrying tends to be a balance between a need for convenience and desire for security), and physiology of Japanese women (i.e. typically smaller hip size, cleavage) I think its fair that Ken T takes it.

Thanks all for taking part - to those who came close you'll probably make it next time.

Ken T - I'll be in touch about shipping address.
