Places of Significance

Equator, Uganda, 2006

What makes a place significant? The equator line running through Uganda, above is marked by a line running across the road (above) and a 3 physics tests designed to play off the natural properties of being on or close to the equator (below). Simple examples of how to visualise the invisible.

Of course, the whole thing is just a tourist trap - the effect in reality is so small you would need a big lab to test for it. These guys are just very good in pouring the water so that it appears to rotate in the way that they want, and make a few bucks off the tourists.

I believe it.

But also that the tourists are very much into being trapped. They've travelled this far and want their experiences. The experience is real, even if the demonstration is not.

Good article on your link btw.

It's almost like magic shows - people go in there to be entertained and fooled, and everybody knows that.

However, there is a difference in getting a buck off a tourist who knows it's all fake, and getting a buck off a tourist using pseudo-scientific mumbo jumbo. The former is called entertainment, the latter is known as conning.

Fine line there. It's as if you lie a lot, it's better than if you only lie a little.
