A Very Simple Question

Gulangyu, 2006

A little busy this week in Xiamen on a field study, so over to you to answer the friday pop-quiz.

Despite him being so open, friendly and photogenic why did I not interview him?

All the clues are in the photo, and the answer in the comments.

Because he was made out of wax?

That would have been my guess, too.

Well that was too easy.

OK, next question - what can a visit to a wax works yield for field research?

normal logic delivers no answer.
other logic says it's the thing to do when researching.doing things that normal logic can't explain.or that apparently have no obvious connection.
if you have a normal logic explanation please share.

Because wax figurines are likely to represent local(ish) cultural ideals and norms in a Platonic sort of way?

Felipov - why is normal logic relevant to the question or answer? Does calling something normal imply that the opposite is abnormal?

> Because wax figurines are likely to represent local(ish) cultural ideals and norms in a Platonic sort of way?

That was my assumption.

For the record the wax works included chinese leaders, historical fitures, ordinary folk in traditional costume, a rogues gallery - Hitler, Stalin +, G5 world leaders (almost a rogues gallery in itself), and international celebrities - Bill Gates, Michael Jordan, Lady Diana.

it's difficult to define normal and abnormal.
it so much depends on what you reffer at.
it just came in my mind that some connections make obvious sense and other connections (as in synapses) make no imediate obvious sense.like eddie izzard's connections make sense for some people that have the same refferences and competlly no sense if you don't have the same refferences, cultural, personal etc.
and because you say that lady diana and jordan are there, it was maybe interesting to see what locals think about who's worthy enough to be in the wax museum.and that makes me think about how information is perceived and distorted(interpreted).
it reminds me about an art project where they brought an american policeman in europe.and he was treated as a superstar just because what's normal in us is perceived completlly diffrent in europe.
to end.normal logic would have maybe said.if you want to know local just find out about local history.normal logic as in basic computer language.non-emotional if then actions.
i don't know if it makes sense to you.
did it help? did it reveal new questions? the wax episode i mean.
