The Half-Life of Food on a Plate

Tokyo, 2006

Back home for a few days.

An observation from a recent meal with friends - as dishes arrive there is a polite free-for-all for food until that is, there is only one portion left on each plate. The final portion of each dish has a half-life - with no-one (obviously) willing to take the whole portion.

So true, but with my friends and sushi we have a saying:

"All fair in love and sushi"

The last piece is for who ever can get to it first.

In russia, when there is only one portion left, it's common to say "shall we turn off the lights?"
