Door User Interface

Door leading from a passenger cabin on a train. Journey times range from 30 to 90+ hours.

Where does the door lead?
What it is are the green and red buttons for?

30- 90 hours is a long time to be beguiled by a strange door interface - I hope you worked out what it meant in the end!
I would assume that the green and red 'button' is rather a push/pop indicator of vacancy for a room that is lockable (for private use). Also I would assume that the primary lock is operated from the inside; with that metallic looking nut below the green button being an external override in case the inside lock didn't work. Therefore I would deduct that this is a toilet. Is this correct?

You're correct on some but not all of these assumptions. It's not a toilet.

I took a journey of 30 hours, but the train is more typically used for the much longer journey of - Beijing to Moscow.
