Mobile Free Zones

The way technology is used changes spaces. Ever walked into a coffee shop where the tapping of laptop keyboards outweighed chatter? What what the atmosphere like?

Signs banning mobile phone put up by staff at the delectable Monmouth Coffee shop in Covent Garden. Where else have you seen signs like these?

golden west cafe in baltimore has a strict no-cellphone rule.

personally, i've never understood the fuss regarding cell phone usage in restaurants -- it's never bothered me. perhaps its a generational difference?

that being said, coffee shops awash with pale-blue laptop glow definitely weird me out...

If mobile phones had the option of broad or narrow casting both sides of the conversation to people in proximity, in perfect audio clarity naturually, then at least we'd be able to make sense of what was being said. Part of me prefers this because the reciever is less in control of their own situation.

Would this be less intrusive than hearing one side of the conversation, or more intrusive?
